“Gallagher said he worked with naval administration to make sure they understood the overall defense benefits of diversifying naval contracts to maintain the viability of naval shipbuilding around the country.
‘Part of the argument we made was we don’t want (all of the Navy’s shipbuilding) to be done by a few on the East Coast,’ Gallagher said. ‘Not only are the Midwest builders the best, but it’s healthier to have a more diverse industrial base, which keeps shipyards alive in the event we ever have to mobilize for war.’”
