WisPolitics: Gallagher Says ‘We Must Stand Up’

U.S. Rep. Mike Gallagher, who is chairing this year’s convention, opened the event by calling on GOP activists to stand up against protesters he said are trying to tear down America’s history.

“I believe our children will look back on this moment and ask where we stood So let them say that we stood up against the mobs that are trying to erase our history. Let them say we stood with our dedicated law enforcement professionals and the men and women in the US military. Let them say that we stood for America’s flag because we stand for America itself. And we stand for the simple idea that America is the greatest country in the history of the world.

“What a better time and place to declare what we stand for than right here at our state convention in Green Bay, Wisconsin. As you know, the Republican Party was born in Wisconsin in opposition to the racist institution of slavery. And it is my belief that the Republican Party will be reborn, right here in Wisconsin, in opposition to the attempts to destroy the ideals of our founding.

“We were born as abolitionists and we will be reborn as those who stood for the simple idea contained in the Constitution, that all men are created equal endowed by the creator with inalienable rights that transcend the color or the circumstances of their birth. And each of you here today are part of that extremely proud tradition. And your work is what allows us to continue that tradition. So I would say to you, stand up and be proud of what you stand for.”
