Mike Gallagher Says he won’t Challenge Democrat Tammy Baldwin in 2024

WASHINGTON – Wisconsin Republican U.S. Rep. Mike Gallagher said he will not run for Senate in 2024, leaving wide open the Republican field for a seat in a key battleground state that could help decide who controls Congress’ higher chamber.

Gallagher told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that he will not challenge Democratic U.S. Sen. Tammy Baldwin next year and rather plans to run for a fifth term representing the state’s 8th Congressional District. A big factor in his decision, he said, is his current position in the House.

“I’m staying in the House and leading the Select Committee on China because our work is simply too important to be a part-time job,” said Gallagher, who was tapped late last year to chair a new committee tasked with exploring the U.S.’s competition with the Chinese Communist Party.

“We have a fleeting moment, a rare opportunity to forge a bipartisan consensus around the actions necessary to defend America from Chinese Communist Party aggression and win this new Cold War,” he said. “That mission is too important and too exciting for me to abandon.”
