Milwaukee Journal Sentinel: Gallagher, back from under-the-radar trip to Taiwan, emphasizes calls for arming the island as tensions with China rise

“Most of the Taiwanese leaders I met with talked about Ukraine as just a massive wakeup call for what happens when deterrence fails and the need to wage peace so that deterrence does not fail,” Gallagher said of Russia’s war in Ukraine during a call with reporters Wednesday.

The four-day trip, which concluded Monday, was the first to Taiwan for the Green Bay Republican tasked with leading a Congressional committee to investigate the Chinese Communist Party’s international influence and economic ties to the U.S. It marked a significant step for Gallagher, who has long called to prepare Taiwan for a potential invasion from China and has warned of a new Cold War….

Gallagher made the trip to Taiwan “solo,” his office told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. But he attended meetings with Democratic U.S. Reps. Ro Khanna of California and Jake Auchincloss of Massachusetts, who sit on the Select Committee on the Strategic Competition Between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party….
